LAURA LIMBOURG – GIRL SCULPTURE NOW!

LAURA LIMBOURG (1996) a young and successful painter with Belgian roots who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2022. During her studies, she managed to win the Critics' Prize for Young Painting. She has had an internship in Taiwan and the USA. A recurring motif in her canvases are prostitutes, or rather sex slaves. Laura Limbourg has been focusing on this theme since she saw first-hand the extent of the sex business in Southeast Asia during her travels there. This underlines the seriousness and widespread nature of prostitution, sex tourism, and the abuse of women (and not only) on the Asian continent. Her paintings also feature other motifs based on her travels to exotic countries - plants and animals from the jungle, religious and cult statues, elements of Japanese historical painting, vases inspired by old porcelain. Often we also find symbolism and motifs based on the artist's hobbies.

Laura Limbourg knows how to work quickly, and above all persistently, because the paintings must not dry completely during the process of creation, as the only way to achieve the effect of dissolving that is so typical of the artist. She paints directly on the canvas, without any preparatory sketches. She likes to use diluted acrylic paints, oil pastels, or watercolours, the blending and absorption of which liberates the scenes from literal descriptiveness. The effect of blurred contours, dustiness, and a kind of transparency of colour is also contributed to by the unsigned canvases or silks that Limbourg stretches into frames and then covers with paint, creating atypical semi-transparent paintings. The canvas then evokes painting on paper. Her style is sovereign and distinctive, and while her paintings may at first glance appear provocative or overly explicit, Limbourg uses them to raise powerful and important themes that deserve national attention.

Vases are one of the main motifs in my work. The inspiration came after a study stay in Taiwan where traditional porcelain and ceramics are made. The motifs that I paint or model in relief on the vases are drawings that intuitively come to mind as I work and everything is meant to be random. The influence from traditional tattoos or old Asian drawings is evident. I try to complement everything and set some motif in today's time so that it is obvious in what period the vase was made.

Tennis is a motif that comes across my work very often. It is a sport that gave me a safe space as a kid, and playing tennis has stayed with me into adult life. I like to paint other fellow artists as tennis opponents in my works, where their personalities and insecurities are shown.
